The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has issued a stern warning against the rising trend of jungle justice, following an incident in which a young woman was assaulted by a mob in Gwagwalada over allegations of child theft.
The incident occurred on October 13, 2025, when the woman was accused of attempting to abduct a two-year-old child. According to police reports, a crowd gathered and began to beat the suspect before officers from the Tungan Maje Division intervened and rescued her from the mob.
In a statement on Monday, by the Command’s Spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Commissioner of Police, strongly condemned the attack, describing jungle justice as a criminal act that undermines the rule of law.
“Taking the law into one’s hands is not only unlawful but can also lead to grave injustices, especially in cases where the accused is later proven innocent,” CP stated.
“The Command will not tolerate any form of mob action and will ensure that those involved in such acts face the full weight of the law.”
The Commissioner confirmed that a discreet investigation into the alleged child theft is underway and assured the public that justice will be served through proper legal channels.
He also reiterated the importance of allowing law enforcement agencies to carry out their duties, urging residents to report suspected criminal activity to the nearest police station rather than resorting to violence.
“The public is reminded that mob justice is a punishable offence. Anyone found participating in such acts will be arrested and prosecuted,” the CP warned.
