The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has intensified enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycles, commonly known as okada, along major roads and highways within the territory, resulting in the impoundment of 21 motorcycles and the arrest of their riders.
The enforcement exercise, carried out on Thursday, involved a joint operation by police personnel under Operation Sweep and officials of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO). The team conducted coordinated patrols across key roads and corridors within the FCT, targeting commercial motorcyclists operating in violation of existing traffic restrictions.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the affected motorcycles were impounded after being found plying prohibited routes, while their riders were apprehended in line with extant laws and regulations governing road use in the territory.
The Command explained that the operation is part of an ongoing inter-agency strategy aimed at reducing traffic-related crimes, preventing the use of commercial motorcycles for criminal activities, and improving overall public safety across the FCT.
Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Miller G. Dantawaye, psc, reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to strictly enforce all security and traffic regulations designed to safeguard lives and property. He warned that continued disregard for the ban on commercial motorcycles along major routes would attract decisive enforcement actions.
CP Dantawaye also assured residents that similar proactive operations would be intensified across the six Area Councils of the FCT to ensure sustained compliance and enhanced security.
The FCT Police Command urged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies, adhere to all traffic and security directives, and promptly report suspicious activities through the Command’s emergency lines: 08032003913 and 07057337653.
