In a decisive step toward building a fully digital economy, the Federal Government has inaugurated a Presidential Committee on Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) to coordinate the rollout of key systems that will power Nigeria’s digital future.
The committee, established in alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive, will oversee the integration of digital identity, financial payment infrastructure, and secure data exchange mechanisms across sectors. It was jointly set up by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
Representing the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to turn Nigeria’s digital potential into tangible public value.
He explained that robust systems for identity verification and digital financial services are critical to secure transactions, wider financial inclusion, and the creation of new economic opportunities. He further stressed that a unified data exchange infrastructure would enhance service delivery, stimulate innovation, and strengthen evidence-based policymaking.
“Data is central to achieving Nigeria’s development goals and strengthening our global digital standing,” Dr. Tijani stated.
Contributing to the dialogue, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), highlighted the importance of adopting a Digital Public Trust model. He called for stronger collaboration between government and private sector stakeholders to build modern, data-driven infrastructure.
“Unlike legacy systems of past industrial revolutions, today’s infrastructure must recognise data as the new economic currency,” Inuwa said.
The Presidential Committee will serve as a central platform for strategic alignment, oversight, and coordination, ensuring that Nigeria’s DPI rollout is inclusive, efficient, and globally competitive.
