The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq has pledged Federal government’s continued support to persons with disabilities.
Umar Farouq made the pledge at the commemoration of the 2020 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWDs) marked by the Ministry in Abuja on Tuesday.
She said the federal government is committed to improving the standards of the vulnerable and also protect the rights of Persons with Disabilities.
“Let me assure you that the Federal Government will continue to be disability-sensitive in supporting and providing a conducive environment towards promoting the participation of Persons With Disabilities and their leadership to enable a fulfilled life with meaningful contributions to societal growth and development.”
“As we mark this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities, I wish to once again celebrate our sisters and brothers and urge us all to avail ourselves of the opportunities presented through the events of this year’s celebration”.
There were performances and dance drama by Afromine Dance Drama Troupe (Deaf Group) to celebrate the day while symbolic presentation of Assistive Devices and Economic Empowerment Tools were made to Persons living with Disabilities.
As part of events to mark the 2020 edition, a Therapeutic Sports Club for PWDs was also launched alongside a Coalition of Civil Societies Organizations For Women and Girls with Disabilities.
Earlier, Muslim Prayers were held at the FCDA Central Mosque while Christian Prayers took place today at an Anglican Church in Gwarinpa Abuja.
The theme for this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities is ‘Building Back Better: Toward a disability – Inclusive, Accessible and Sustainable post covid-19 world’ which focuses on ensuring that Persons With Disabilities are equipped and empowered for the Covid-19 world.
