The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the nation’s 115 Federal Unity Colleges into models of excellence, innovation, and national unity. This declaration was made by the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, at the 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Principals of Federal Unity Colleges held in Lagos.

Professor Ahmad urged principals to rededicate themselves to reforming secondary education as a driver of economic empowerment and national development, stressing the importance of curriculum reform, teacher professionalization, and digital integration in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. She also assured that the Ministry would continue to support teacher certification and professional development through the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) and the National Teachers Institute (NTI).

Hon. Dr. Mark Oseni, Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education, commended the principals for their professionalism and pledged legislative support for improved funding and oversight of Unity Colleges. Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Adebayo Adegboye encouraged the adoption of innovative initiatives such as the “Light Load, Stronger Minds” programme, which emphasizes vocational and digital learning to equip students for 21st-century challenges.

Other speakers, including Dr. Iyela Ajayi (NSSEC), Mrs. Eucharia Onodu (WAEC), and Barr. Mrs. Chinedu Amure (USOSA), highlighted the critical role of digital literacy, ethics, and industry partnerships in enhancing the relevance and quality of Unity Colleges. Awards were also presented to top-performing Unity Colleges during the event.

According to the Director, Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, the Ministry reaffirmed its resolve to strengthen Unity Colleges through curriculum enhancement, teacher development, infrastructural upgrades, and innovation, aiming to produce well-rounded graduates capable of contributing meaningfully to national growth and unity.
