The former President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has congratulated Governor Godwin Obaseki over his landslide victory in the governorship election.
Obaseki, who is the incumbent and just secured another four years, defeated his closest rival of the All Progressives Congress of Nigeria (APC), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.
Jonathan on his Facebook wall said that, “I congratulate His Excellency Godwin Obaseki on his re-election as Edo State Governor and the INEC Nigeria for overseeing a process that allowed the votes of the good people of Edo to count.
“Democracy can only be consolidated to promote good governance in our nation and continent when our elections become credible, transparent and truly represent the wish of the voters.”
The former President further stated that, “Democracy is about the good of all the people and not for winners and losers.
“As the election has been contested and won, I urge His excellency to rise above partisan politics and govern for the good of Edo people, irrespective of party leaning.
“This is the way to deepen our democracy and bring development to the people,” former President Jonathan reiterated.
Gov. Obaseki who contested and won his first term election in 2016 under the flagship of APC, later fell out with the disgraced National Chairman of APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; a protracted disharmony that led to his decamping to PDP.
INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, who announced the result of the election on Sunday, said PDP polled 307,955 votes to defeat his closest rival, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, of the All Progressives Congress, who scored 223,619 votes.
The governorship election was conducted on the 19th September, 2020 in all the 18 local government areas of Edo State.
