Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have recorded another major operational success with the disruption of an illicit drug supply network believed to be supporting terrorist activities in the region.

The breakthrough was achieved under Operation DESERT SANITY V on January 23, 2026, following credible intelligence that led to the arrest of a suspected drug dealer in Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State. The suspect, Hauwa Abulazeez, aged 65, is alleged to be a key supplier of cannabis sativa to Boko Haram terrorist elements operating across Askira Uba, Rumirgo, Gwahi, Wamdiyo, Uvu and Gaya communities.

According to preliminary investigations, the suspect reportedly sourced the illicit drugs from Sarti Baruwa Local Government Area of Taraba State and transported them through established supply routes for onward distribution within the North-East theatre of operations.

During the operation, troops recovered 14 compressed blocks of cannabis sativa with an estimated total weight of about 30 kilograms. The seizure represents a significant interception aimed at cutting off resources used to sustain terrorism, criminality and instability in the region.

In a statement issued on Sunday, January 25, 2026, by the Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, disclosed that the suspect is currently in custody undergoing preliminary investigation, while follow-up operations are ongoing to identify, trace and dismantle the wider trafficking and distribution network linked to the supply of the illicit substance.

Military authorities said the successful interception highlights the strategic importance of disrupting criminal supply chains that fuel insurgency and other violent activities. By denying terrorists access to illicit drugs and logistics support, the operation contributes to improved security, reduced criminal influence and the restoration of lawful authority across affected communities.

Operation HADIN KAI reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to confronting and eliminating all forms of criminality in the North-East through sustained intelligence-driven operations and continuous pressure on criminal networks, until lasting peace and stability are achieved.
