The House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on Flood Management and Response has commended the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for its proactive disaster management efforts and pledged legislative backing to strengthen flood preparedness across the country.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Head of Press, NEMA, Abuja, Manzo Ezekiel.

Chairman of the Committee, Dr Midala Usman Balami, who led members on a familiarization visit to NEMA headquarters in Abuja, praised the Agency’s initiatives in safeguarding lives and property, while assuring that its challenges, particularly limited resources, would receive legislative attention.

He emphasized the need for stronger Local Emergency Committees and synergy between state and federal structures to ensure timely response to disasters.

NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, briefed the lawmakers on NEMA’s mandate, ongoing interventions, and persistent challenges, highlighting various proactive initiatives by the Agency to mitigate and respond efficiently to flood and other disasters in the country.

She reiterated the Agency’s commitment to disaster preparedness and community-level engagement, stressing that no community should be left behind in times of crisis.

The lawmakers also inspected NEMA’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), which aggregates real-time flood data and coordinates multi-stakeholder response efforts.
