An Ex-Soldier of the Nigerian Army identified as Corporal Sa’idu Lawal, aged 41 years old, has been arrested by the police with assorted brands of weapons and ammunition he distributes to criminals gangs within Zamfara State and neighbouring Katsina, Kaduna, Niger, Kebbi, and Sokoto States.
The Ex-serviceman was attached to 73 Battalion, Janguza Army Barracks, Kano. However, no details of his service records were revealed by the police.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Zamfara State Command, SP Mohammed Shehu, said in Gusau that Lawal specialised in kidnapping, Armed Robbery, Gun Running, and other heinous crimes that have for long been disturbing the peace and security of Zamfara State and neighbouring States.
Items recovered from the suspect included one AK-47 rifle with Breech No. Q971987; one AK-49 Rifle with Breech No. 34-7094; 200 7.6mm Rounds of live ammunition; 501 7.62X51mm Rounds of GPMG live Ammunition and eight empty magazines
SP Shehu gave further explanation of how the suspect was arrested. “On 27th August 2022 about 1730hrs, Police Tactical/Escort Team attached to the Commissioner of Police Zamfara State Police Command, CP Kolo Yusuf had acted on actionable intelligence that led to the arrest of the suspect who was Ex-service personnel of the Nigeria Army attached 73 Battalion Janguza Army Barracks Kano.
“The suspect was intercepted with a Pontiac Vibe vehicle with Registration number: KRD 686 CY Lagos, along Abuja –Kaduna enroute Zamfara State.
“A Search conducted on the spot led to the recovery of the exhibits in his possession.
“In the course interrogation, the suspect confessed that he was to convey the said exhibits from Loko Local Government Area of Nasarawa State to his customer one Dogo Hamza, a male of Bacha village in Tsafe LGA of Zamfara State.
The suspect further confessed that he had previously supplied the same consignment to his other customers in Kaduna, Katsina, Niger, and Kebbi States respectively.
However, a discreet investigation is ongoing with a view to arresting his partners for the dastardly crime.
