…AS NDDC UNVEILS EMEABIAM ROAD CONSTRUCTION
By Okosun Dennis
After years of neglect and abandonment of Eziobodo – Emeabiam Community roads by successive governments of the state, the Niger Delta Development Company (NDDC) is set to flag off the construction of the road on Sunday, July 25, 2021.
The project, facilitated with the assistance of the First Lady of Ondo State, Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu that would bring needed relief to the two communities especially Emeabiam located in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo state.
It was gathered that the construction is designed to commence from Ihiagwa – Emeabiam intersection, which by extension, would bring huge relief to the people of Okolochi, another major community in that axis, given a better alternative to access Ihiagwa through Eziobodo route.
In a statement signed by Pastor Iyke Onuoha observed that the road network was so deplorable that it became a source of nightmare to the indigenes especially during rainy seasons when vehicles are trapped in muds and flood water.
According to him, “Owerri people embrace development in all spheres of human existence; as such overwhelming welcome NDDC as it deploys human and material resources to commence construction works in ancient Owerri communities known for rich cultural heritage in the hospitality of food and music.
Adumbrating on wielding her influence as an Indigene of Emeabiam community, Onuoha, a Public Affairs Analyst added that “we salute the exceptional courage and kind-heartedness of a worthy ambassador, Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, popularly known as Igolo Ada-Emeabiam 2.
“With 21 gun salute, we herald and honour our own who has periodically unveiled strategic programme designed to transform communities and uplift lives of people in her home of Imo state.”
Titled: “Reaching the unreached communities of Owerri,” Onuoha noted that motivated with the aspiration to contribute in improving the living conditions of citizens of her people, Mrs Akeredolu pulled her enormous Goodwill to attract the NDDC to intervene in the construction of the Eziobodo-Emeabiam road which has remained inaccessible from time immemorial.
Being largely agrarian in economic structure and occupational definition it was revealed, there was the compelling need for cooperation and intervention considering its largely subsistent farming, oftentimes, faced untold hardships and losses in efforts to transport produce from the farms to meet demands of major markets and residents of urban centres.
Emeabiam, projected to have over 70% Indigenes who reside in ancestral local communities, is characterized with evidence of deprivation, degradation and depression on account of inadequate or total absence of basic infrastructure which is reflected in poor healthcare delivery facilities and services, high infant/maternal mortality rate, unstable economic mobility, coupled with low purchasing power.
It is assured that with the rehabilitation of the existing roads; a lot of innovative ingenuities in these areas would be brought to bear hence Pastor Iyke Onuoha greets Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu as “Nde Owerri na ekele hi, nakwa ashi go ndewooo. Imenaooo, uwa riboola go mma nga Ori oha n’aha jisos Christ. Amin.”
