Concerned with increasing cases of heavy downpour in Lagos state which resulted in floods that swept away vehicles and passengers, the Lagos State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Corps Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide has warned drivers in the state to exercise caution while driving.
This, he said was to avert the hazards associated with heavy rains and floods during the season.
A press statement signed by Commander Olabisi Sonusi, FRSC Public Education Officer in Lagos on Monday, expressed worries that the heavy downpour is creating enormous traffic challenges that resulted in the loss of lives and properties.
He, therefore, urged everyone especially the drivers to join hands to tackle the menace.
According to him, with the rainy season and heavy downpours being experienced almost every day in the State, incidents of floods that swept away vehicles and passengers are becoming a daily occurrence.
He noted that as the lead agency in road traffic management and safety administration in the state, the Lagos State Sector Command is concerned with the ugly trend and called on all stakeholders to act fast by adhering strictly to the safety rules.
The Sector Commander further observed that not only is the heavy downpour accompanied by the flood obstructing the road and hampering the free movement of vehicles, but it also causes poor visibility to drivers. He, therefore, advised drivers to take all necessary safety precautions whenever it’s raining.
“Our advice is that drivers must operate with utmost caution and safety consciousness to avert the hazards associated with the weather conditions.
Drivers are advised to park at a safer place and allow the flood to recede before proceeding on the journey” he stated.
Ogungbemide also directed patrol teams to look out for vehicles that violate the requirements for minimum safety standards, saying such vehicles must be impounded to the base to get their faults rectified, thereby stopping them from causing hazards to themselves and other road users.
“All drivers must ensure that they drive with minimum safety standards by fixing the safety gadgets to avert the menace associated with the rainy season,” he further stated.
It would be recalled that due to incessant downpours in the state which resulted in heavy floods, vehicles and people have reportedly lost their lives to the incidents, and all hands must be on the deck to tackle the challenges.
