Nigerians have been called upon to take the business of security seriously and assist various security agencies in intelligence gathering and detection of crimes as it is a collective responsibility.
Head of Security, Access Bank Plc, Mr. Chuks Maha, in a keynote address during a one-day Annual Security Conference organised by the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP) held at the Civic Centre Victoria Island on Wednesday, explained that it was unfortunate that most crimes that happened within our environment are not caught by our eyes due to carelessness or lack of interest about things that happen within our surrounding or environment.
As a result, he observed, it becomes impossible to regurgitate what happened to give the exact reports to the security agencies as a witness that would assist them in their investigation.
He implored the citizens to leverage the use of their eyes to observe, detect crime, have a mental picture of the scene, individuals involved, and what they wear, and report or give exact information to the security agents.
While commending the Nigerian Police for carrying out their task physically without too much technological assistance, he called on Nigerians to imbibe the power of observation – using their eyes – in crime prevention.
In his contribution, the former AIG Operations, Police Headquarters, and the immediate past Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, AIG Hakeem Odumosu canvassed for the urgent need to sensitize members of the public on the importance of intelligence gathering.
Adding that it is the role of every member of the Nigerian society to assist the security agencies with prompt intelligence, he admonished that everything shouldn’t be left in the hands of the security agencies.
He reiterated in an interview with our correspondent that “members of the public need to give information to security agencies for them to work better and more proactive. We need to sensitize them so that they can key into the security architecture of the country.
“Intelligence gathering is a thing every Nigerian must take as a challenge,” AIG Hakeem Odumosu (retd) reiterated.
