MILITARY HIGH COMMAND VISITS LAGOS STATE TASKFORCE OVER DEATH OF POLICE OFFICER

Admin October 16, 2024
MILITARY HIGH COMMAND VISITS LAGOS STATE TASKFORCE (1)3

The Commander, Military Police Unit of the 81 Division, Nigerian Army, Colonel Charles Nwonyi, with other delegation from the Nigerian Air Force Base, Ikeja, on Wednesday visited the Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Akerele Adetayo in his office at Oshodi.

Colonel Charles Nwonyi, explained that the committee was at the Taskforce on the instruction of the Military High Command over the unfortunate incident of 9th October 2024, when military personnel stabbed a police officer, leading to the death of Inspector Saka Ganiyu.

The officer, who was attached to the task force was carrying out his statutory duty when he arrested and confiscated the soldier’s vehicle for driving against traffic (One-Way), along Iyana-Iba-Ojo Cantonment area.

Others in attendance at the meeting were the 2nd in Command to the Chairman of Lagos State Taskforce, SP Abutu Tony, Head of Department of Environmental Services, Lagos State Taskforce, Mr. Asokere Samson Sedonu, Assistant Director (Account), Mrs. Bisi Adeniran, DSP Adeyemi Adewale and ASP Ademola Ayorinde.

According to Colonel Charles, the culprit has been arrested and the Military high command is currently investigating the matter to ensure that appropriate disciplinary action is applied.

He added that the Nigerian Army was vigorously working on practical measures to enhance their work in synergy with sister security agencies and by extension other paramilitary bodies.

Responding, the Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Akerele Adetayo expressed the agency’s appreciation for the genuine concern shown by the Nigerian Army on the misdemeanours of their personnel, which incidentally led to the death of Inspector Saka Ganiyu.

CSP Akerele, decried the unruly behaviour of some military operatives that have become a menace, often leading to conflict which is at variance with the statutory mandate of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (Taskforce), to enforce Lagos State Transport Sector Laws.

While emphasizing the dedication of the agency to carry out its duties to the letter, he commended the military high command on efforts to sensitize its personnel on the need to work within the ambit of the laws.

CSP Akerele, added that the taskforce will give needed support to the Nigerian Army in the course of their investigation to ensure justice is served for the fallen police officer, and serve as a deterrent for disobedient security operatives across all agencies.
