The News Editor of Murhi International Television (MITV) Lagos, Mr. Sunkanmi Ajao and members of his family narrowly escaped death last Saturday when fire from unknown source gutted their residence at Harmony Estate, Ifako Ijaiye area of Lagos in the afternoon hours, destroying property worth over a million naira.
Narrating his experience, Ajao who had worked as Senior Crime Reporter with the Ikeja Lagos based television station before his elevation to the News Editor position, said the incident occurred at about 3.30pm. According to him; “on Saturday, August 8, I was planning to go the office for the normal news production when my second daughter woke me from sleep that their room was on fire in our residence at Harmony Estate, Off College Road, Ifako Ijaiye in Lagos.”
“I went to check and behold, it was already an inferno. I had to quickly wake my eldest daughter up from sleep too and rushed all of them outside the compound. I had to raise alarm in my neighbourhood and luckily, more than 40 people battled the fire and put it out.”
“I lost properties and all the belongings of my children. In fact, the only clothes left with them after the incident was the ones they were wearing. I could not ascertain the cause of the fire outbreak till now because there was no electricity as at the time it started.”
Meanwhile his professional colleagues particularly those on crime beat have been sending sympathy messages while thanking God that no life was lost. As at press time, it could not be ascertained if the authorities of the Lagos State Safety Commission or Lagos State Fire Service had been communicated with a view investigating what could possibly be the cause of the fire outbreak.
It could also not be ascertained as at press time, if any sabotage was suspected since there was power outage as at the time the fire began, thereby ruling out the possibility that it could have been caused by electricity.
