By Okosun Dennis
A 37-year-old housewife, Mrs Mary Stephen Okoi has mysteriously disappeared from her grandfather-in-law Palace in Delta State without a trace or clue to her where about.
As a result, the immediate family members have accused the husband, grandfather-in-law of responsible for her sudden disappearance after a frosty relationship that played out on the Eve of Christmas in 2020.
Mary was legally married to Mr. Collins Okpo Ugbome of No. 45, Ujuju Street, Off Umusan Road, Kwale, Delta State and until her disappearance, she was a mother of two daughters identified as Louisa and Chisom.
According to the elder brother in a petition to the Inspector General of Police, IGP Adamu Mohammed, Mr. Okoi Stephen Okoi disclosed that her sister, Mary Stephen Okoi was last seen at the Palace of her husband’s grandfather, His Royal Highness, Igwe Ugbome II of Okpai Kingdom, Umuada Quarters in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State.
Mary Stephen Okoi, who hails from Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross Rivers State, along with the husband and children, were said to have travelled to the family house to celebrate the Christmas on December 24, 2020.
However, in a petition addressed to the Inspector General of Police, IGP Adamu Mohammed, dated January 11, 2021 from Ibrahim Haruna Ngada & Co Chambers on behalf of the woman’s family appeal to the IGP to use his good offices to cause a discreet investigations into the sudden disappearance without traces despite a Cable Circuit Television (CCTV) camera domiciled in the palace.
At the moment, Mr. Stephen Okoi, the eldest brother and petitioner has accused the in-laws of responsible for their missing sister considering that she was invited by the grandmother, Mrs Igwe Ugbome of Okpai Royal Palace and as soon as she arrived, there was an alleged misunderstanding between Mary and the grandmother-in-law.
“Mrs Mary Okoi had not been in good cordial relationship with her husband and his family lately and she was last heard of at family’s Royal Palace; and also bearing in mind the fact that the Palace has CCTV cameras and security operatives on guard 24 hours.”
While the family have viewed every explanations given with mutual suspicion laced in uncouth innuendos and without tangible facts to believe their narratives, they added that such explanations by the Royal family as to the disappearance of Mary Stephen Okoi on December 24, 2020 is tainted with conspiracy which no reasonable and responsible individual would accept with regards to human life.
The petitioner further stated that the news of their missing sister was broken to them by the younger sister, Mrs Blessing Okoi, resident in Benin City on December 25, 2020 instead of the husband, with whom they were in the palace where the unfortunate incident took place.
Besides, the CCTV that would have provided some clues, the husband’s family alleged stopped working a long time ago hence no image was captured of what transpired in the palace.
The family, therefore, calls for a detailed investigation by all relevant law enforcement agencies, and national and international human rights organizations to intervene and ensure justice is done for Mrs. Mary Stephen Okoi’s case and bring culprits responsible for her disappearance to justice.
In the light of the above, the family of the missing woman has vowed to remain law-abiding and are ready to provide more details in the cause of investigations with a view to seeing their complaint to a logical conclusion.
