The National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP) has condemned in strong terms the ban on Twitter operations in Nigeria, saying the ban is uncalled for, while appealing to President Muhammadu Buhari to reconsider his decision.
The Association made its position known in a statement signed by its National President, Mr. Samson Oki.
Oki reminded the Federal Government that though there are unsavory contents on the app, the gains of the platform are greater than its minuses. He, therefore, appealed to the Buhari-led administration to rescind its decision and restore operations of the microblogging site.
“Twitter has not only become a medium of communication in recent times but also a veritable marketplace, where businesses are contracted and executed with diligence. So, banning it within the Nigerian space will further impoverish more Nigerians, who somehow have carved a niche for themselves.
Therefore, we appeal to the President to weigh the actions on a balanced front and kindly call back the order,” he said.
The NAOSNP president also called on the Nigerian public to give peace a chance as regards the manner of posts they unleash on the public domain not to intimidate or offend the conscience of another because social media is a public space.
“We also seek to call to order the Nigerian public and prevail to take warning as regards online publications. At NAOSNP, we insist on the publication of verified and authenticated news stories and urged other associations and media platforms to follow suit.
“Fake news is almost synonymous with our society, and we must do everything within our powers to fight against it,” Oki reasoned.
NAOSNP’s principle is based on integrity and as an Association of online security news publishers, is at the forefront of disseminating facts in graphics and figures.
