NETHERLANDS DEEPENS DEVELOPMENT TIES WITH PLATEAU AS GOVERNOR MUTFWANG POSITIONS STATE FOR GLOBAL AGRICULTURAL INVESTMENT

Plateau State is fast becoming a priority destination for Dutch agricultural and development cooperation, driven by the reform-oriented leadership of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang. This momentum was reinforced on Monday when the Deputy Ambassador of the Netherlands to Nigeria, Mr. Ronald Sonnemans, led a high-level delegation on a courtesy visit to the Governor at the Government House, Rayfield, Jos.

Sonnemans, who visited Plateau for the first time in 15 years, expressed delight at the transformation he observed in the state, describing its environment as “refreshing and conducive for investment.” He commended Governor Mutfwang’s strategic visit to the Netherlands in September, noting that the engagement triggered a matchmaking process that is already connecting Dutch agricultural firms with Plateau-based businesses.

During his tour of the state’s major potato market, the Deputy Ambassador was particularly impressed by the robust participation of women in the distribution and wholesale value chain, supplying markets across Nigeria and parts of West Africa.

“The climate is great, the soil is fantastic, and the workforce is very dedicated. All these ingredients make Plateau State an attractive ground for strengthened cooperation,” Sonnemans said. He affirmed the Dutch government’s readiness to deepen and expand its partnership with the state.

Governor Mutfwang, while welcoming the delegation, said Plateau is eager to harness the Netherlands’ globally acknowledged expertise in modern agriculture, agribusiness systems and technology. He highlighted two priority areas for collaboration: strengthening the potato value chain and improving livestock production.

“We saw a small country with a small population but with a big heart. What we witnessed in terms of agricultural advancement is something we yearn to be part of,” the Governor said. He added that Plateau’s comparative advantage—fertile land, favourable weather, and a committed workforce—will be maximised under his administration.

“What has been lacking is the political will to bring these assets together and create value. That political will is now here,” Mutfwang said, pledging a renewed commitment to elevating cooperation between the Netherlands and Plateau State.

The Governor reiterated his administration’s drive to position Plateau as a competitive agricultural hub capable of attracting global investment, boosting productivity, creating jobs, and strengthening food security.

The Dutch delegation included officials from the Consulate-General in Lagos, the Agricultural Office in Accra, and the Embassy in Abuja, alongside senior government officials from Plateau State.

With growing international attention and sustained government commitment, Plateau State is reinforcing its status as an emerging model for agricultural innovation and global development partnerships.
