The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has temporarily suspended the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991, following high-level discussions with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
According to the statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the decision was reached during a courtesy visit to the Force Headquarters in Abuja by a delegation of the NBA, led by its President, Mr. Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN. The meeting focused on the legal and operational implications of enforcing the law prohibiting tinted glass and explored broader concerns about law enforcement and public confidence.
While emphasizing that no court has issued a definitive order restraining the enforcement of the Act, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) stated that it has chosen to suspend enforcement temporarily out of respect for public interest and in recognition of its partnership with the NBA. The suspension will remain in place pending the outcome of a Motion on Notice scheduled for hearing at the Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State, on October 16, 2025.
To foster sustained collaboration, the Police and the NBA have jointly established a standing committee aimed at enhancing synergy between the legal profession and law enforcement in upholding the rule of law.
In the interim, motorists and vehicle owners are advised to use this period to regularise their vehicle documentation and ensure full compliance with all relevant laws concerning the use of shaded or tinted glass.
IGP Egbetokun reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to enforcing all laws with fairness, professionalism, and due regard for citizens’ rights. He further stressed the importance of constructive engagement with key stakeholders in the justice sector.
