Nigeria has been internationally recognized for its leadership in digital governance, earning two major awards at the 2025 Open Government Partnership (OGP) Global Summit held in Spain. The recognition highlights the country’s growing role in leveraging technology to enhance transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement.
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), in collaboration with civil society organization Dataphyte, led Nigeria’s award-winning efforts. The country received the Regional Award for Africa and the Middle East, acknowledging its progress in advancing open digital governance across the region.
In a further milestone, Nigeria also received the Thematic Award for Digital Governance, emerging as the overall global winner in the category. This award was selected from 160 commitments submitted by 42 countries participating in the summit.
These accolades underscore Nigeria’s commitment to building an inclusive, data-driven governance ecosystem through strategic partnerships between government and civil society. The country’s winning submission showcased innovative policies, digital platforms, and collaborative frameworks designed to make governance more open, participatory, and technology-enabled.
“This recognition is a testament to Nigeria’s holistic approach to digital transformation, anchored on principles of transparency, accessibility, and inclusivity,” said a representative from NITDA.
“It reflects the strength of our partnerships and the power of innovation to improve governance outcomes for citizens.”
Nigeria’s award-winning digital governance initiatives align with its broader national strategy for digital transformation, driven by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.
