…says ”we resume earlier than usual”
By Okosun Dennis
The Regional Coordinator of National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Mrs Funmi Opesanwo has said that despite the population surge from enthusiastic applicants to register for the National Identification Number (NIN), they have been able to cope with their influx accordingly.
Opesanwo who disclosed this in a chat with our correspondent in her office at Ikeja, noted that in order to accelerate the process of registering applicants, about 54 centres are fully functional in Lagos State.
She, therefore, urged applicants to make use of available centres to register while at the same time, implore them to be patient with their staffs as everybody would be attended to in no distant time.
To make that realistic, Mrs Opesanwo added that over 200 licensed private and public agents including some banks have been licensed to capture data on behalf of NIMC and the moments they are fully functional, it would reduce the burden on NIMC facilities.
One of such measures put in place to fasttrack enrollment process included making staffs to resume work earlier than usual to enable them attend to more applicants.
“We started Registration in 2012. Though we have had enormous challenges but we have been able to surmount it. The Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr Ali Isa Pantami has mandated us to book applicants for appointment and that has really helped us tremendously.”
“The booking of appointments has made the exercise seamless in Lagos. We have licensed agents that are allowed to capture data. The likes of MTN, the TECOs, Airtel, Glo, 9Mobile, Banks are licensed to capture data. The burden on NIMC facilities would be greatly reduced the moment these licensed agents fully commence data capturing in the next couple of weeks.”
“Some licensed agents have started and the moment all are fully functional, their impact would be felt greatly in Lagos State.”
However, “the supports from our dedicated staffs have been instrumental to our success story. Our resumption time has changed against resuming by 8am, you would realise that people are attended to as early as 7am.”
“The officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have helped us in the area of crowd control because the people outside is quite enormous.”
“A lot of Nigerians believe that if they don’t come to Alausa-Ikeja, they wouldn’t be attended to. It is what we are doing here that is being replicated in those centres”
Therefore, “I encourage people to go to the nearest Local Government Area and Community Development Area (CDA) in their area to register. You don’t need to move from one place to another to get registered, just visit the nearest LGA or CDA and register,” Mrs Opesanwo reiterated.
