NITDA DG ADVOCATES BALANCED REGULATION

The Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, has called for a balanced regulatory approach that safeguards users online without stifling free expression.

He made the remarks while delivering a keynote address titled “Strengthening Trust and Accountability in Nigeria’s Digital Future” at the Stakeholders Workshop on the Online Harms Protection Bill, held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation in Abuja.

The proposed legislation seeks to establish an Online Safety Council, introduce mechanisms for platform accountability, and provide systems of redress for victims, while ensuring the protection of civic and democratic freedoms.

The workshop brought together government leaders, civil society organisations, technology platforms, and digital rights advocates. Also in attendance were the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, and the Chairman of the House Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, Hon. Stanley Adedeji Olajide, underscoring the National Assembly’s commitment to inclusive, transparent, and citizen-led digital policy reform.
