The only female participant in the 264Recreation Children Chess and Scrabble Championship 2020, Nmesomachukwu Orji, has defeated other male participants to emerge as the champion in the junior category in Abuja.
The championship was organised for kids between the ages of 5 – 14 years at the 264 Lane, Cajaah Estate, Orozo, along Karshi Road, Abuja.
It was learnt that the 10-year-old was the only female participant in chess and defeated eight others in a keenly contested game to emerge the best.
With her calm, calculated, confident and determined disposition, her composure saw her floored seven other male opponents in the 8th round to amass 14 points, the same scores with her elder brother, Kosisochukwu Orji, another skillful player.
However, she outclassed him during a sudden death tie to win the chess championship 2020 in her category.
Receiving the coveted Chess Championship trophy, a gold medal and cash prize of N20,000 from the Special Guest of Honour, Chairman of Board of Trustees, Orozo Mass Housing Scheme Landlords Association (OMHSLA), Mr. Samuel Etajuwa, Nmesomachukwu expressed gratitude to God for her victory and thanked the organisers of 264Recreation for the championship.
The Special Guest of Honour, Mr. Samuel Etajuwa, also expressed joy and fulfillment for having the opportunity to redeem his earlier pledge during his opening address to the participants to give all four winners in championship a special gift.
Satisfied with her performance, Nmesomachukwu acknowledged the efforts of her coaches and support of her parents and well-wishers, pledging to be more attentive in subsequent 264Recreation Saturday weekly chess and scrabble coaching lessons in order to improve her game to enable her win more laurels in subsequent championships.
Winners in other categories were a 12-year-old David Akinrata, the scrabble champion in the Junior category; Daniella Ugwuoke, a 6-year-old emerged Scrabble Champion in the intermediate category for 5 – 8 years and Olagunsoye Oyewunmi, a 7-year-old chess champion for the intermediate category.
It was gathered that a total of 27 kids registered to participate in the Children Chess and Scrabble Championship which was held from 11th to 13th December 2020.
Highlights of the championship were the colourful carnival drive from Cajaah Main Gate to the venue of the championship at the 264 Lane with thrills and musical rendition by Boys Brigade of ECWA, Lokogoma along Karshi road.
The Christmas and end of the Year 2020 party concluded 264Recreation activities for the children.
