The Executive Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike on Tuesday vows that no project initiated by his administration would be abandoned or uncompleted at his expiration of his tenure as Rivers State Governor.
Governor Wike, while speaking in Port Harcourt on the state of Rivers, politics and sundry national issues, stated that the Federal Government was yet to release the N78billion refund which was recently approved by President Mohammadu Buhari for Rivers.
He said, “When I won election in 2015 as governor, I knew I was in opposition. I knew the Federal Government will not execute projects in this State. I cannot also use that as an excuse for non-performance. So, I designed a policy of what to do for the State and implement it.”
“When I came in, I inherited several uncompleted projects, some ongoing, others are abandoned. Some of these projects I have completed. But let me say this, all projects initiated by me will be completed before I leave office.”
“Mark my word, no project we have awarded or initiated will be abandoned or uncompleted when I leave. I will see to it that all projects will be completed and we are working seriously in that direction.”
On the N78Billion refund, he said, “Forget about what people are saying on the pages of newspapers. When this money was approved, we expressed our gratitude to the President. But hear me; we are yet to receive that money.”
“So when people say we are awarding contracts or doing projects because we received N78Billion, I laugh. We have a duty to develop Rivers and when you are committed and prudent with resources, you can achieve what you want for the people.”
Governor Wike, while recounting his landmark achievements in the state said, “Shelter is important and you cannot play with it. What we have done is monumental and cannot be found in any state in the country. It is not limited to the Judiciary. It is done across different arms of government in the state. It is also done for the Legislature. We are building the Assembly Residential Quarters. We provided logistics and vehicles for the Nigeria army when the Sixth Division was created.”
“Our support extends to the security agencies, Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, Nigerian Bar Association and Students Union. It is our policy to enhance the capacity of the Judiciary and Legislature as a commitment towards actualising the independence of those arms of government.”
“We built the Industrial court. When I assumed office, that court was in Bayelsa State and 80 percent of cases were from Rivers. So, we wrote to request approval to build in Rivers State. The same thing we did with the Court of Appeal that was in poor condition,” he stated.
Governor Wike said his administration extended N500 million interest free loan to members of the Nigeria Medical Association for the upgrading of their medical facilities. Some of the Doctors, he said, diverted the funds and frustrated the implementation of the second phase of the programme.
The Governor also explained that the five flyovers under construction would not only ease movement but also enhance the economy of the State. He also said that, contract for the Woji-Aleto-Alesa to Refinery Road would soon be awarded to ease movement from Okrika to Port Harcourt.
