Famfa Oil Limited has delivered a major boost to Nigeria’s healthcare and medical education landscape with the commissioning of the Modupe and Folorunso Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital at Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Osogbo.

The facility was officially commissioned by former Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, GCON, at a ceremony that drew senior government officials, traditional rulers, university authorities, and executives of Famfa Oil Limited, underscoring strong institutional support for private sector investment in public healthcare infrastructure.

In his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of Osun State University, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, described the hospital as a transformational addition to the institution and Osun State at large. He said the facility would significantly enhance the university’s College of Health Sciences by providing the clinical depth required for high-quality medical training, cutting-edge research, and specialist healthcare services. He expressed deep appreciation to the donors and Famfa Oil Limited for what he termed a lasting legacy for future generations.

Speaking at the event, Co-Donor and Chancellor of Osun State University, Apostle Dr Folorunso Alakija, said the commissioning marked the realisation of a vision conceived more than seven years ago. She explained that the project, which commenced with a sod-turning ceremony in November 2018, evolved from an initial plan for a paediatric hospital into a full-scale medical research and training hospital in response to the growing needs of the university and the country’s healthcare system.

According to her, the 250-bed hospital is designed to address critical gaps in medical manpower development, research capacity, and access to specialised healthcare, while also contributing to the reduction of medical tourism. The facility features 20 clinical departments, five non-clinical departments, state-of-the-art research laboratories, advanced diagnostic and imaging units, multiple operating theatres, intensive care units, maternity and neonatal services, and other specialised facilities built to international standards.

Apostle Alakija acknowledged the support of successive Osun State administrations, past and present university leadership, and the Ataoja of Osogbo for their roles in facilitating the project. She also called for sustained collaboration to provide complementary infrastructure, including staff housing, emergency transport systems, and future expansion of the hospital.

Commissioning the hospital, Professor Osinbajo commended the donors and Famfa Oil Limited for demonstrating the impact of private sector leadership in strengthening public institutions. He noted that sustainable national development depends on strong universities and well-equipped teaching hospitals capable of training skilled professionals, advancing research, and delivering quality healthcare. He stressed that partnerships of this nature are vital to improving health outcomes and building resilient national systems.

Goodwill messages were also delivered by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Professor Wale Oladipo, the Chancellor of the university, and the Executive Governor of Osun State, all of whom highlighted the hospital’s strategic importance to the university and the state.

The Modupe and Folorunso Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing medical education, research, and healthcare delivery at Osun State University, while serving as a model for effective private sector collaboration in national development.
