It was a piece of hell early Saturday as hundreds of people were killed in a fire orchestrated by illegal bunkering activities at a border between Oquzi in Ogba/Egbema /Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State and Abeji in Ohaji Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.
The fire was said to have occurred in an illegal bunkering site situated at the boundary between the two states leading to the death of men, women, and children in their hundreds. Most of the victims were burnt beyond recognition on April 23, 2022.
Confirming the development, the state spokesperson of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), DSC Olufemi Ayodele expressed sadness in the unfortunate incident.
The Rivers State Commandant of the Corps, Abu Tambuwal condemned the act of sabotaging the economy of the nation, environmental degradation, and fire outbreak through oil bunkering activities.
He affirmed that the Command would not leave any stone unturned in the fight against illegal dealings in petroleum products, oil theft, and illegal bunkering activities.
While commiserating with the families and loved ones of the bereaved, Tambuwal commended the efforts of the security agencies Nigerian Army, Department of State Security, Nigeria Police, and the NSCDC who carried out emergency response, crowd control, and adequate security in the environment to prevent nefarious activities by hoodlums.
