The Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara has stressed the importance of peace and security to protecting critical national assets.
As such, he sought the support of the Nigerian Army (NA) in having robust collaboration reiterating that the state government will continue to lend its support to ensure an enduring peace.
He gave the assurance when the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division, Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah paid him a courtesy call at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Wednesday, 19th February, 2025.
Governor Fubara said, “Definitely, we are not going to ask you to do anything unprofessional, but to have this working relationship, because you need us to succeed, and we also need you to succeed.”
He expressed his appreciation for the honour accorded his administration, and assured to provide support within the powers of the government to make sure that the GOC succeeds, thanking other officers in the GOC’s entourage, whom he noted have been working in addressing security challenges in the state.
He said, “And, finally, I want to say that our task today is becoming gradually complicated because of the set of people that have chosen to become a problem to this country. We have issues of pipeline vandalization, and destruction of gas and crude oil pipelines. “So, please, while you’re taking that responsibility as part of your assignment, whenever you need our intervention, endeavour to reach out, so that we can also apply our mechanism because when it comes to issues of Chieftaincy and community relations, it is within our powers.”

He further said: “I am really happy that you are here to do the ritual, and nothing special. Coming here to see me doesn’t mean that we have any special relationship. It is normal, and that is the right thing to do.”
Earlier, the GOC, Major General Emekah restated that the task of the 6 Division is essential to protect critical national assets and provide security in the Niger Delta Region.
He reassured of the protection of these assets. The GOC reiterated that recently, there was a change of baton across formations in the NA, and he was posted to 6 Division as the GOC. Having assumed command on 24 January, 2025, he decided to pay a courtesy visit to formally introduce himself to the Governor.
Major General Emekah said: “My visit here this afternoon is customary in the military, and I believe, in other organizations too, that when you assume Command, you pay a courtesy visit to your hosts, political masters, traditional rulers and other stakeholders within your area of responsibility.
“And being the Chief Host of 6 Division, I deemed it very necessary to come here this afternoon to formally introduce myself to you. Also, to thank you for creating an enabling environment for the NA to operate in the Rivers State.
