…SETS TO COMMISSION ULTRA-MODERN SPORTS COMPLEX IN OJO
By Okosun Dennis
The Chief of Naval, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo has said that the daily mental and physical routine of service personnel is hinged on sports and physical training.
As a result, the benefits derivable from participation in sports by personnel through programmed periodic sports engagements like the NN Games cannot be downplayed.
While briefing the press at the Headquarters, Western Naval Command, Apapa, on Monday as part of the events kick-starting the 12th Nigerian Navy Games 2022 and the commissioning of the new Sports Complex in Navy Town, Lagos.
The CNS stressed that the Nigerian Navy has always had an impeccable record of performances in global sports fiestas which has brought her laurels and accolades.
Vice Admiral Gambo was represented by the Chief of Administration, Naval Headquarters, Abuja, Rear Admiral Jason Gbassa.
Outlining the activities for the games, the CNS explained that the forthcoming 12th biannual Nigerian Navy Games 2022 would commence with the commissioning of the complex on the 8th, dovetailing into different sports activities that would be rounded off on the 13th of September 2022.
It was revealed that the well-equipped complex has among others, an ultra-modern sports complex equipped with an indoor sports hall, a gymnasium and a swimming pool.
Other facilities include a football pitch with a standard pavilion, outdoor courts for handball, volleyball, and basketball as well as tracks for athletics.
He further restated the importance it attaches to sports that has made it a centre-point for identifying and developing talents that would represent our nation in both national and international competitions in the future.
“In recognition of this key role of sports in personnel development, the Nigerian Navy under the leadership of Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (Admiral Medal) continued with the efforts of past Nigerian Navy leadership to complete the sports complex which is to serve as the hub of producing sports talents for the Nigerian Navy and the nation.
“I wish to reiterate that while the Nigerian Navy Games is a biennial event, it does not rely on it alone to keep its athletes and personnel in good physical and mental condition.
“Additionally, the Nigerian Navy’s female volleyball team, CNS Spikers, had the honour of representing the nation at the last African Women Volleyball Championship which was held in Tunisia in May this year. Presently, the male and female teams are topping their leagues,”
X-raying some historical antecedents of the Nigerian Navy in sports competitions, it noted that the Nigerian Navy’s active involvement in sports is not a one-off thing but has a long history.
“It would be recalled that the first Nigerian Olympic medal (Bronze) was won by Nojim Maiyegun, a Nigerian Navy personnel. WCPOPTI Gilbert participated in the 1964 Olympic and 2nd All African Games as a member of the Nigerian boxing team and the late Commander Bellah (a hurdler) was a member of the Nigerian contingent to the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in Australia.
The biannual Nigerian Navy Games 2022 will feature naval personnel who will compete favourably among themselves in different sporting activities across all the venues within the sports complex.
