The Imo State Police Command has warned members of the defunct Imo Security Guards and the general public to return all the arms/ammunitions and cartridges in their possession on or before June 30, 2021, or incur the wrath.
In a statement on Saturday by the Senior Assistant, Media to the Commissioner of Police, CSP Mike Abatam said the exercise began on Friday, June 18, 2021.
He explained that while they served as operatives of the defunct Imo Security Network in their various Local Government Areas, they possess such arms and are advised to voluntarily return them to the nearest Police Station or to the State Police Headquarters Owerri, Imo State unfailingly.
“The command warns in strong terms that any defunct Imo Security Guard personnel who refuses to return his arm within these stipulated dates will attract severe consequences.
In another development, on June 17, 2021, the operatives of the Tactical teams of the Command about 0300hrs through diligent and painstaking investigation and surveillance exerted a hot pursuit of suspected criminals that stole a vehicle belonging one Mr. Chibuzor Ohamairo of Umuhia Abia State who is a resident of MCC Umuoba Uratta in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State.
It was learnt that the suspected criminals later abandoned the vehicle in the bush and took it to their heels where the Police recovered the vehicle in Imo River Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State.
Also, following reliable information, Tactical teams of the Imo Command stormed the hideouts of a notorious suspected criminal along the Owerri Nekede Axis where one Godwin Chukwuemeka AKA “Match and Die”, 35 years old was arrested inside the ceiling compartment of his residence.
The suspect is alleged to be a dismissed Soldier of the Nigerian Army. On interrogation, he confessed to being part of the hoodlums that attacked the Imo State Police Command Headquarters and Correctional Centre, Owerri early this year.
However, the following items were recovered from the suspect: a cut to size double barrel gun; a black browning pistol; two live cartridges; one expanded cartridge; a military camouflage and desert boots.
The Commissioner of Police has urged the officers and men of the command to sustain the tempo of the moment while commending them the good people of the state for their undaunting support and solicited for an all society approach to improve security in the state.
