The attempt by a Nollywood Actor to rent some assorted rifles for film production purposes has landed him in trouble as men of the Nigerian Police Force attached to Delta State have arrested him.
The actor identified as Mike Omoruyi, 38 years old of Odo Street Obiaruku, was arrested on June 15, 2021, at about 1245hrs, when Police operatives attached to Rapid Response Squad, while on patrol along Obiaruku/Umuebu road intercepted before arresting him.
A search carried out on him led to the recovery of one Lar rifle without a magazine, one fabricated AK 47 rifle, one Air rifle, one Pump action, one English double-barrel gun, and two toy guns.
However, Delta State Police spokesperson, DSP Edafe Bright said an investigation later revealed that the suspect happens to be a Nollywood producer who had hired the above-mentioned guns for film production.
“Further investigation led to arrest of the suspected gun runner, one Chief Otuya Josiah, 57 years of Umuebu community who also confessed that he rented the guns to the first suspect at cost of N50,000 for film production.
In another breathe, the police on June 16, 2021, at about 1030hrs, led by the Divisional Police Officer Owa-Oyibu Division acting on credible intelligence swooped on the resident of one Monday Igwe, 28 years old, where gunshots were reported heard at night in Owa-Alero community.
Consequently, a combined team of police/vigilante led by the divisional crime officer stormed the premises at Ale Igwe quarters, when a search conducted two locally-made cut-to-size pistols were recovered.
He confessed one Frank Ewere Mafile, 32 years who he claimed supplies him cartridges, was arrested at his home and two locally-made cut-to-size pistols was also recovered from him.
His confession also led to the arrest of one Ngozi Elelegwu, 39 years old of Anslem Street off Ogbocho Road by General Hospital Owanta. One locally made double barrel gun and three live cartridges were recovered from him.
He admitted to have sold 12 live cartridges to Frank Ewere Mafile at a rate of N6,500. Monday Igwe also confessed that he bought the arms at Nnewi in Anambra State at the rate of N30, 000.
All the suspects have been arrested and transferred to the state criminal investigation department for further investigation.
The Commissioner of Police Delta state, CP Ari Muhammed Ali, while assuring members of the public particularly residents of the state of the command’s determination to make the state safe for all, also urges members of the public to continue to support the police.
He assured that the Command is doing everything possible to ensure that the state is properly policed, adding that members of the public are advised to desist from crime and criminality as the command is motivated more than ever before to go after a criminally minded individual who are bent on destabilizing the peace of the state.
