What would have been a deadly attack by bandits on Njaba Town in Imo State, South East Nigeria was foiled by the police early Saturday morning, July 31, 2021 about 0120 hours.
Confirming the incident, the state police spokesperson, CSP Michael Abattam said that “a convoy of bandits moving towards Njaba Town to launch an attack was foiled as they were intercepted by Operation Restore Peace team of the Nigeria Police, Imo State Command.
In the ensuing fire fight, he explained, one of their operational vehicles was demobilised and two of them neutralised and the remaining ones scampered into the bush.
“On searching the vehicle, one AK47 rifle was recovered with 10 Rounds of live Ammunition and a locally made double barrel pistol with two expended cartridges.
The criminal were said to have “detonated an Improvised Explosive Devices into the parking lots of a nearby Njaba Police Station causing minimal damage.
Meanwhile, “cordon and pursuant exercise are ongoing in the area” and members of the public residing in the area have been admonished not to panic as the ongoing “Police clearance operation is designed to root out violent criminals in that axis,” CSP Abattam reiterated in the statement.
However, he pleaded with members of the public to avail Police information of persons seen treating bullet wounds or hiding within the community or report to the nearest police station.
