A police officer attached to Ogombo police station, Lekki area of Lagos has been detained at the Zone 2 Command Headquarters, Onikan, Lagos following an unlawful shooting of an operative attached to the Nigerian Legion.
He was said to have been shot in an estate at highbrow Lekki Peninsula in Lagos.
The detention of the officer who was identified as Supol Abayomi followed a complaint lodged at Zone 2 by angry members of the Nigerian Legion and residents of the estate who witnessed the incident and quickly reported it.
The injured Legionnaire is currently receiving treatment in a private hospital and the bill is said to be taken care of by the Ogombo Police Station where the trigger-happy cop is serving.
Members of the Nigerian Legion in their large number had protested the attack on its personnel to the office of the Chairman, Nigerian Legion, Lagos State Command under Col Samuel Akande (retd) alleging that members of the Nigerian Legion have oftentimes been maltreated by personnel of the Nigerian Police Force, often times, leading to the untimely death of most Legionnaires and some suffered a high degree of injuries.
It was learnt that the latest incident was a result of little disagreement about not allowing motorcycles to enter the estate where they are deployed; an order which emanated from residents of the estate where the legion personnel works.
It was further gathered that the order was resisted by the policeman who threatened the Legionnaire with his rifle and later shot him in the thigh.
The latest police brutality coupled with past experiences has drawn the attention of the Assistant Inspector General of Police Zone 2, AIG Bode Adeleke who has ordered a full-scale probe into the incident and warned police operatives in the Zone comprising Lagos and Ogun State to be disciplined in the discharge of their duties.
