As Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo celebrated his 65th birthday, he hosted a grand ceremony, highlighting his commitment to the welfare of the people of Anambra State.

The Governor’s visits to a psychiatric facility in Nawfia, Onitsha Correctional Centre, St. Charles Borromeo Specialist Hospital, Onitsha, and Iyienu Hospital, Ogidi showcased a blend of compassion and empathy that has become the hallmark of his servant-leadership style.

According to the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, the day began midday as Governor Soludo first visited the Psychiatric Hospital in the heart of Nawfia. Upon arrival, he was greeted by staff and patients alike, with many expressing their gratitude for his presence. Governor Soludo took time to engage patients in heartfelt conversations, bringing smiles to their faces.

He emphasized the importance of mental health awareness, stating, “Mental health is just as important as physical health. We must work together to break the stigma surrounding mental illness and ensure that those who need help receive it,” calling on the people, especially the youth, to be mindful what they consume, for the sake of their mental health.

During the visit, the Governor announced the ongoing construction of a mental rehabilitation facility in Nibo. He also pledged support for the Nawfia facility.

He was also at the Correctional Centre, Onitsha, where he spoke to inmates about hope, redemption, and the importance of rehabilitation. In a poignant address, he remarked, “Every one of us deserves a second chance. Our facilities should not only serve as centers of confinement but as places of transformation.”

Governor Soludo emphasized the need for them to take advantage of the vocational training programmes that empower inmates with skills for reintegration into society upon their release.

“We want our youth to find purpose and opportunity without having to turn to crime,” he stated, inspiring both inmates and staff with his vision of reform.

The governor rounded off the day with visits to two hospitals, each stop revealing the challenges faced by the healthcare sector. His first visit to St Charles Borromeo Specialist Hospital, Onitsha, brought him face-to-face with patients and healthcare workers battling inadequate resources and overcrowding.

“Healthcare is a fundamental human right that should be provided by the government, and we must ensure that every citizen has access to quality care,” he asserted, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to enhancing health outcomes across Anambra.

In Iyienu Hospital, he cut the birthday cake, courtesy of the students. The governor’s enthusiasm and genuine concern for the welfare of the less fortunate injected hope into the hearts of many.

As he rounds up the historic visits, Governor Soludo reflected on the experiences, stating, “This is just the beginning. My 65th year will be driven by a renewed sense of purpose – to uplift the underserved, empower the vulnerable, and promote healing in every corner of Anambra.”

The Governor was accompanied by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, Chief of Protocol, and Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr. Chinedu Nwoye, among others.
