It was a Black Saturday for Retired Members of the Nigerian Armed Forces (REMENAF) as its National Chairman, Brig Gen Harold Uwem Udokwere was shot to death by armed robbers in his house in Abuja.
Brig Gen H. Udokwere was said to have been attacked in the early hours of Saturday morning at home in Abuja.
It was revealed that on his body, “there was a wound on the top side of his forehead and top of his left shoulder. His right thumb also had pealed from the under lower skin below the nail and was bleeding profusely before he died.”
According to a statement on REMENAF social media platform on Saturday, the National Coordinator, REMENAF and spokesperson Coordinator Concerned Veterans (CCV), Sedisyne Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts gave an insight into the attack on the well-respected senior Army officer.
Quoting the wife of the deceased officer, he said that the suspected armed robbers attacked the General’s house at approximately 0300 hrs on 22nd June 2024, at No. 1 Sanga Street, Sunshine Homes by Kabusa Junction at Lokogoma Abuja.
She further explained that on getting into their house, they asked for her jewellery, adding that this was the third time the family would be attacked. He took his pistol and they later heard gunshots.
Narrating his part, a neighbour to the late officer, Pastor Awe added that the robbers also injured one of the Estate guards but was later taken to the Hospital at Abacha Barracks along with Brig Gen Harold Udokwere.
“While the injured guard was being treated at Abacha Barracks Hospital, the General was referred to National Hospital, Abuja (NHA) where he was confirmed brought in dead.”
As a result, Air Cdre MM Igho and Air Cdre SA Zakari (rtd) rallied around the family to provide needed succour while Zakari did all he could to calm the wife before making former reports to Maj Gen Dr. Okereke, Comd NAOWA Hospital before retrieving the remains to NAOWA Hospital Morgue.
Before the unfortunate incident of his killing by armed robbers, Brigadier General Harold Uwem Udokwere, (retd) was the National Chairman, REMENAF.
Meanwhile, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police, have ordered an immediate Investigation into the attack and killing of the retired Army officer, Brig Gen Harold Umem Udokwere (retd).
In a statement on Saturday evening, spokesperson of the Command, SP Josephine Adeh said that “In response to the tragic attack at Sunshine Homes Estate by armed robbers, resulting in the untimely demise of one Brigadier General Uwem Harold Udokwere (rtd.) on June 22, 2024, the Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, has ordered a thorough and discreet investigation into the circumstances surrounding this regrettable event.
Expressing profound condolences to the bereaved family, CP Benneth Igweh, assured the family and the public of swift justice, and made every effort to ensure the perpetrators of the atrocious act are apprehended and brought to justice.
Furthermore, the Commissioner of Police reaffirms the unflinching commitment of the command to amplify the security landscape of the nation’s capital, by continually adapting strategies to effectively combat evolving criminal activities.
