Efforts by school communities to strengthen child protection and security in Anambra State have yielded results, as the Anambra State Police Command has taken custody of a 29-year-old female suspect, Mrs. Edeh Osinachi, over the alleged abuse of a 17-year-old girl in Awka.
The suspect was on Tuesday, February 4, 2026, handed over to the Police by officials of the Anambra State Ministry of Education following reports of sustained abuse inflicted on the minor, said to be living with the suspect as a house help.
In a statement by the Command’s Spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, preliminary investigations revealed that school officials noticed visible injuries on the victim during a teaching session and promptly raised concerns. Upon inquiry, the girl disclosed that the injuries were allegedly inflicted by her guardian after she made phone calls using the woman’s mobile phone without permission.
According to the victim’s account, the suspect reportedly punished her by inflicting severe injuries. During police interrogation, the suspect was said to have confessed to the act, while investigations have since been intensified.
Commending the vigilance and prompt intervention of the school authorities, the Anambra State Police Command assured the public that the matter would be thoroughly investigated and that the suspect would be made to face justice in line with the law.
The Command also used the opportunity to caution parents and guardians to ensure adequate care and supervision of children under their responsibility, stressing the need to prevent situations that expose minors to abuse and exploitation.
