The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has advised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), FCT Council, to reschedule its planned protest slated for Tuesday, February 3, 2026, citing credible security intelligence indicating potential threats to public safety.
In a statement issued on Monday, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the Police Command confirmed awareness of the planned peaceful demonstration and reiterated its respect for the constitutional rights of citizens to lawful assembly and protest.
However, the Command disclosed that intelligence reports at its disposal point to plans by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) and other non-state actors to infiltrate and hijack the protest, a development capable of undermining public peace and security within the nation’s capital.
According to the Police, the advisory to reschedule the protest is a precautionary measure aimed at preventing a possible breakdown of law and order, while safeguarding the lives and property of residents, commuters, and other lawful users of public spaces in the FCT.
“The appeal is made in the overriding interest of public safety and the protection of the rights of all residents to freedom of movement and the conduct of lawful daily activities,” the statement noted.
The FCT Police Command assured residents of its unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security across the territory and urged continued cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
Authorities also reaffirmed their readiness to provide security for all lawful activities conducted in a manner that does not pose risks to public order.
