Security operatives in Anambra State have arrested seven suspected members of the Black Axe confraternity, allegedly undergoing initiation ahead of recruitment for election-related thuggery in parts of the state.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, on Sunday, the suspects were apprehended in the early hours of October 26, 2025, during a joint operation carried out by operatives of the Special Anti-Cult Squad (SPACS), Enugu-Ukwu, and the Agunechemba Vigilante Group.
The arrest took place in a bush at Obinagu, Abagana, in Njikoka Local Government Area, where the suspects were allegedly participating in an initiation ritual. Items recovered from the scene included a 25-litre keg containing a red liquid substance, red ritual cloth, two wooden drums, and footwear belonging to the suspects and their accomplices.
The suspects—Ugorji Emmanuel (29), Ogamba Chinuike Anthony (22), Chibuzor Agudiegu (25), Destiny Okasi (22), Udewulu Nzube (19), Ifeanyi Anikpe (21), and Sunday Akuma (20)—were all male.
Preliminary investigations, according to the statement, indicate that the initiation activities were part of efforts to groom members for violent roles during the forthcoming November 8, 2025, governorship election, particularly in Njikoka and Anaocha Local Government Areas.
The police said the suspects attempted to flee upon sighting the security team but were subdued after a brief pursuit. An investigation has been launched to apprehend other fleeing members and dismantle related cult networks operating in the area.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, mnips, PhD, reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to ensure a peaceful election atmosphere and warned that security agencies would not tolerate any activities capable of disrupting public order.
He urged parents, community leaders, and youth groups to intensify efforts in mentoring young people against cultism and political violence. The CP also appealed to residents to continue providing credible information that can help the police prevent crime and apprehend criminal elements.
