A Private soldier attached to 202 Battalion of the 21 Special Armoured Brigade in Bama, Borno has shot his superior officer, Lieutenant Babakaka Shehu Ngorgi dead.
Ngorgi, was the Administration Officer (AO) of the battalion. Although reasons for the shooting were unclear, a military source disclosed that both officers had some disagreements in the previous day which bothered on the issue of Pass (casual leave) and unpaid allowances.
It was further gathered that the officer, who got married about eight months ago was actually having a telephone conversation with his wife when the soldier went gaga and allegedly opened fire on him shooting him several times.
A military source who gave the name of the soldier as Private Uzonna Maduabuchi said immediately the shooting ended, he was disarmed, arrested and detained in the guardroom by the Nigerian Army authorities.
While in the detention facility, he was overheard saying, “I have achieved my aim,” which points to the fact that the soldier might have planned the act before he executed it. But others said he might have carried out the killing after suffering some mental lacerations or disorders.
However, confirming the killing, the Acting Director, Army Public Relations (DAPR) Colonel Musa Sagir said the shooting occurred around 10:30am.
Musa in a statement explained that: “A Trooper of the Nigerian Army serving in 202 Battalion of 21 Special Armoured Brigade Bama, Borno State, went berserk at about 1030 hours onJuly 29, 2020 and fired at an officer (a Subaltern) which led to his death.”
“The incident happened when the soldier approached the officer who was standing in front of the Unit’s Headquarters making a phone call. The soldier has been arrested, and is in custody undergoing investigation. General situation in the unit is calm.”
“The remains of the deceased officer have been evacuated to 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital.”
“Investigation into the case has since been instituted to determine the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.”
“The family of the deceased has already been contacted,” Col Musa reiterated.
It would be recalled that this is not the first time that a soldier would open fire against a colleague killing them in the process.
Early this year, on February 26, 2020, an aggrieved Corporal at the Army Super Camp 15 in Malam Fatori, Borno state had killed four of his colleagues and injured two other soldiers in the process.
As at the time of the incident, the Corporal was serving at the Theatre Command Operation Lafiya Dole.
