STABILIZATION OF PEACE AT WURKUM CHIEFDOM 1

The 6 Brigade Nigerian Army / Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) has received a high-powered delegation from the Wurkum Chiefdom, who praised the Brigade and its leadership for the outstanding role played in restoring peace, stability, and peaceful coexistence across communities affected by communal tensions in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The delegation, led by Mr. Iliya Idris, representative of the Chief of Wurkum, paid a courtesy visit to the Headquarters, 6 Brigade Jalingo, on Thursday, 20th November 2025, to convey the Chiefdom’s appreciation to the Commander, officers, and troops for their unwavering commitment to protecting the lives and property of citizens within the area.

During the meeting, Mr. Idris described the Nigerian Army’s intervention in the crisis involving the Shomo and Wurkum tribes as timely, professionally executed, and critical in saving the situation from escalating into large-scale communal violence.

He noted that the swift deployment, impartial handling of the dispute, and continuous monitoring by troops under 6 Brigade played a decisive role in stabilising the flashpoints, particularly in Usmanu Village, where tensions had previously threatened to spiral into wider conflict.

According to him, the entire Wurkum community remains grateful for the military’s persistent efforts in maintaining neutrality, enforcing law and order, and encouraging dialogue between concerned parties.

These actions, he emphasized, have not only restored calm but have equally revived public confidence in government institutions and the capacity of security agencies to deliver justice fairly without prejudice or favoritism.

He further stated that the visible presence of troops has helped residents to return to their homes and livelihoods without fear of attack or intimidation, thereby allowing normal social and economic activities to resume.

He assured the Commander that the Wurkum people are ready to cooperate fully with the Brigade and other security agencies in upholding peace, and will continue to advocate for tolerance, unity, and respect for lawful processes.

In a show of solidarity, the delegation expressed deep condolences to the Nigerian Army on the recent passing of Brigadier General M. Uba, describing his death as a painful loss to the nation and to the communities he served with dedication and sacrifice.

They prayed for the repose of his soul and called on the institution to remain steadfast in the ideals he stood for.

Responding, the Commander, 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, thanked the Wurkum delegation for the thoughtful visit, the goodwill message, and their willingness to partner with security agencies to sustain the peace.

He noted that the success gained in Karim Lamido and other parts of Taraba State is the result of collaboration between security agencies, the state government, traditional rulers, and local communities who continue to share valuable information and support troops in the field.

He reaffirmed that 6 Brigade remains unwavering in its duty to defend all communities without bias, uphold justice in the discharge of its operations, and create an environment where sustainable peace and development can thrive.

The Commander urged community leaders, youths, and residents to remain law-abiding, cooperate with constituted authorities, embrace peaceful resolution of disputes, and support ongoing peace-building efforts across Taraba State.

He further emphasized that the Nigerian Army will continue to act with fairness, professionalism, and respect for human rights as it works to ensure that every community—no matter its size, tribe, or beliefs—can live without fear and pursue its aspirations in an atmosphere of security and harmony.
