TINTED GLASS PERMIT POLICY STILL LAWFUL, NIGERIA POLICE CLARIFY

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has clarified that the Motor Vehicle Tinted Glass Permit Policy remains lawful and operational, stressing that there is no court judgment or subsisting order restraining the Police from regulating the use of tinted vehicle glasses across the country.

The clarification followed recent public debates on the policy, including comments credited to the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Force said it was necessary to provide institutional clarity in the interest of public order, respect for the rule of law, and public reassurance.

According to the statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police reaffirmed that while it respects ongoing judicial processes, pending litigation does not automatically suspend the lawful responsibilities of the Police unless a court expressly orders otherwise.

“As of today, there is no final judicial pronouncement declaring the Motor Vehicle Tinted Glass Permit Policy unlawful, nor is there any subsisting order permanently restraining the Nigeria Police Force from performing its statutory duties in relation to the regulation of tinted vehicle glasses,” the statement noted.

The Force emphasised that it operates strictly within the Constitution and under civil authority, adding that the Inspector-General of Police has consistently reiterated the Police’s respect for the judiciary and commitment to complying fully with valid court orders.

The Police explained that the administrative communication issued on December 15, 2025, was intended solely to guide internal planning and enhance public understanding, stressing that it neither directed immediate enforcement actions nor authorised conduct inconsistent with any court process.

While acknowledging that restraint had been exercised in deference to judicial proceedings, the Force cautioned that such restraint should not be misconstrued as a waiver of its lawful authority, particularly in matters relating to public safety and national security.

The statement underscored that the regulation of tinted vehicle glasses remains a legitimate security concern, noting that heavily tinted vehicles have been linked globally and locally to crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and other serious offences.

The Police assured that where enforcement is lawfully undertaken, it would be carried out with professionalism, moderation, and strict adherence to human rights standards.

The Inspector-General of Police also reaffirmed a zero-tolerance stance on extortion, harassment, or abuse of authority by police personnel, warning that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action.

While condemning misconduct by individual officers, the Force cautioned against generalising isolated incidents to discredit the institution, stressing that thousands of police officers risk their lives daily to protect lives and property nationwide.

The Nigeria Police Force described the Nigerian Bar Association as a valued stakeholder in the justice sector and pledged continued constructive engagement based on mutual respect for institutional roles.

The statement concluded by urging members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, reiterating the Force’s commitment to acting lawfully, responsibly, and independently while safeguarding public safety and national stability, pending the final determination of the court.
