President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Super Eagles for securing the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), describing the achievement as a proud moment for Nigeria and a testament to the team’s resilience.
The President commended the national team for overcoming the disappointment of their semi-final loss to host nation Morocco and finishing the tournament strongly. On Saturday, the Super Eagles defeated seven-time champions Egypt in a dramatic third-place match, prevailing in a penalty shootout after dominating regulation time.
President Tinubu noted that the victory reflected the determination, persistence and fighting spirit for which Nigerians are known, stressing that the players refused to be discouraged by earlier setbacks in the competition.

Despite their impressive run at the tournament, Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the final were dashed following a penalty shootout defeat to Morocco last Wednesday. However, the President said the team remained focused and undaunted, drawing strength from the resilient Nigerian spirit to claim a deserved place on the podium.
He expressed confidence that Nigerians would take pride in the team as they received their bronze medals on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco, describing the achievement as one that “surely feels good like gold.”
President Tinubu also extended his appreciation to the players for their gallant performance and commitment to national honour, applauding them for once again flying Nigeria’s flag high on the continental stage.
The congratulatory message was conveyed in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, on January 17, 2026.
