Following the clash between some soldiers of the Nigerian Army and some policemen of the Lagos State Environment and Special Offences Enforcement Unit, Task Force on Wednesday in Lagos, 81 Division has said the investigation has begun to unravel the cause of the clash.
Some soldiers and policemen in a rival video engaged in a fisticuff around the Apongbon area.
Although speculations were rife over the possible cause of the fight, the spokesperson, 81 Division, Nigerian Army, Lt Col Olaniyi Osoba said on Thursday morning that “there was a misunderstanding between the policemen and the soldier over an alleged traffic issue.”
Although the unit of the soldier was not disclosed, his shoulder flash indicated that he belongs to the Infantry Corp.
Col Osoba further explained that “I am very much aware of the matter trending on social media involving one of our soldiers and a policeman around the Apongbon general area yesterday.
“The situation is under control as normalcy has been restored to the general area. At the moment, everybody is going about his or her normal business.
“Consequently, we are looking into the matter to fully ascertain what transpired. We will get those involved and investigate what transpired. Thereafter, necessary action will be taken,” the statement stated.
It was learnt that some soldiers were said to have driven against traffic on Wednesday and were stopped by a team of policemen attached to the Lagos State Environment and Special Offences Enforcement Unit, Task Force.
As a result of the verbal altercation, they engaged in physical combat. Policemen and soldiers clash, even though were common in the past, have been a thing of the past in recent times.
