The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has assured residents of accelerated development across the territory in 2026, calling for increased cooperation, discipline and unity to drive sustainable progress.
Wike gave the assurance in his New Year message to residents of the FCT on Wednesday, marking the beginning of 2026. He commended residents for their cooperation and support in the previous year, noting that significant achievements were recorded despite daunting challenges.
According to the minister, the FCT Administration has already laid the groundwork for key projects and programmes that would stimulate growth in critical sectors such as education, health, transportation, agriculture, the judiciary and security.
He said residents should expect the commissioning of rehabilitated schools, roads, bridges, health facilities, transport hubs, judicial infrastructure and other projects aimed at improving the quality of life across the territory.
Wike noted that 2026 coincides with the third anniversary of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, adding that the FCT Administration intends to mark the milestone by showcasing tangible developments that positively impact residents.
He attributed the ongoing transformation of the territory to the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which, he said, has driven unprecedented development from Abuja city centre to satellite towns and area councils such as Abaji, Kuje and Kwali.
The minister also highlighted the significance of 2026 as the year marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Federal Capital Territory, describing the golden jubilee as a testament to the vision of Nigeria’s founding fathers and the nation’s enduring unity.
On the political landscape, Wike reminded residents of the forthcoming Area Council elections in the six councils of the FCT, urging eligible voters to exercise their franchise responsibly. He assured that the FCT Administration would ensure a peaceful, free and fair electoral process.
He further noted that political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections would intensify later in the year, assuring political actors and residents that the FCT Administration would continue to provide a conducive environment for lawful and orderly political engagements.
Wike urged residents to uphold the values of diligence, discipline and law-abiding conduct, stressing that unity of purpose remains essential for peace, prosperity and progress in the FCT.
He concluded by wishing residents and their families a joyful, peaceful and prosperous 2026.
