No fewer than 43 irate youths were on Monday arrested by men of the Nigerian Police for burning it’s Border Control Post at Daddara, and the Nigerian Immigration Service Check point located at Danmasani in katsina State.
The incident which took place in the early hours of today about 08:30hrs was purportedly sponsored by smugglers and their agents who targeted joint border patrol personnel and their facilities.
It was learnt that when the Command got wind of the disgruntled youths and adults rioting and protesting, who were mainly from Daddara village, Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina state, the police were said to have activated their squad to counter the youths.
Consequently, the Command teams of Police Mobile Force (PMF) and conventional units succeeded in arresting 43 persons found rioting while one died in the frascas.
Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Gambo Isah said the angry protesters were said to have blocked the Katsina – Jibia Highway, at Dadda village, smashing and destroying vehicles of security agencies and that of innocent citizens passing along the highway.
Apart from setting ablaze a Police and Immigration posts, the irate youths also destroyed one Police Border Patrol Van (stationery), one Volkswagen Gulf 3 motor vehicle belonging to the officer in charge of the police border post, two AK 47 rifles belonging to Joint Border Drill Forces, one Ak 47 rifle and a pistol belonging to Police Mounted troops.
In addition, the rioters also smashed and damaged the windscreen of many motor vehicles of innocent commuters passing through the highway.
However, the teams had succeeded at bringing the situation under control in the area.
SP Isah revealed that preliminary investigation revealed that, the riot was purportedly sponsored by smugglers and their agents targeting joint border patrol personnel and their facilities.
He reiterated that investigations were ongoing with a view to arresting more perpetrators and their sponsors and bring them to book.
However, the Katsina State Commissioner of Police, CP Sanusi Buba, has promised to bring all the perpetrators to book to serve as deterrent to others.
