Following the gruesome killing of a soldier and staff of one of the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) by a soldier of the Nigerian Army, who had gone berserk, the force has begone an investigation to unravel the misery, particularly the mental health of the soldier.
Major Samson Nantip Zhakom, Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters Theatre Command, had signed a statement regretting the loss of the victims, adding that the victim was neutralised by personnel.
“The Theatre Command Operation HADIN KAI regrets to inform the public of a sad occurrence at one of our military base. A soldier shot and killed a staff of one of the NGOs providing humanitarian support in the North East.
“The soldier also killed another soldier and injured the co-pilot of one of the UN helicopters. Own troops on the ground immediately neutralized the errant personnel.
“The injured co-pilot has been stabilized while the corpses of the deceased have been moved to the 7 Division Hospital.
“Detailed investigation into the incident and subsequent remedial actions have commenced into the highly regrettable incident,” the statement added.
However, the Borno State Gov. Babagana Zulum on Friday condoled with the UN over the killing of a humanitarian worker, identified as Mrs. Alem Muluseta, by a Nigerian soldier who ran amok in Damboa Local government Area of Borno on Thursday.
His letter of condolence entitled: “Condolence and Solidarity” was addressed to the UN’s Resident Representative in Nigeria, Mr. Matthias Schmale.
“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the incident that happened in Damboa on Thursday.
“My condolence goes to the family of Mrs. Muluseta, her colleagues at Medicine de Monde (France), and the whole Humanitarian Community and the UN, who continually make huge sacrifices to support our people.
“This was a sad, isolated incident the like of which we have not seen before, and which may not be unconnected with the mental health of the soldier involved,” Gov. Zulum wrote.
“We will continue to work together with the military and with our partners to support mental health programmes in their theatres of operations,” Zulum added.
Meanwhile, the UN Humanitarian in Nigeria today, 18th November 2022, said the incident that occurred in the North East that claimed the life of one of its Aid workers will not affect the cooperation, support and harmonious relationship existing between the UN Humanitarian organisation and the Nigerian Military.
The Head of Office OCHA- Nigeria, Mr. Trond Jenson said this when the Theatre Commander, Maj Gen Christopher Musa paid him a condolence visit on behalf of the officers and men of Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI.
He expressed sincere condolence to the representatives of the Non- Governmental Organizations in the North East and his team over the loss of one of their staff who was shot by a soldier and for the injury sustained by the co-pilot.
