The FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has warned residents and traders in the Territory not to sell kerosene and petrol under high-voltage transmission lines or beside power transformers.
A statement by the Head, Public Affairs of FEMA, Nkechi Isa, said the Director General of FEMA, Alhaji Abbas Idriss gave the warning at the continuation of the Agency’s dry season sensitization at Maitama Ultra-Modern Market, Kubwa.
Idriss who was represented by the Director Forecasting, Response and Mitigation, Mrs. Florence Wenegieme, lamented that illegal structures removed around the market in 2022 had been brought back.
“Today we are in Kubwa market, you will recall that sometime in 2022 there was a kerosene explosion in this Kubwa village market and to be specific this location. Where a lady was selling kerosene and another woman was frying akara and there was an explosion and we were involved in the rescue operations”.
“Looking in front of us we see a generator mechanic and somebody selling kerosene right beside a transformer and under a high-tension wire,” she said.
“This is why the Minister of the FCT, Malam Mohammed Musa Bello, his Minister of State counterpart, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, the permanent secretary in the FCTA, Mr. Olusade Adesola, and the DG FEMA directed us to come out immediately to advice residents on how to mitigate incidences of fire outbreaks in the Territory”.
Mrs. Wenegieme who commended the management of Kubwa market for equipping the facility with fire extinguishers, however, appealed to them to ensure that all blocks in the market had extinguishers.
Speaking later while performing a fire drill, the Divisional Fire Officer, Kubwa, Uwadonah Hope Idorenyin advised residents to always equip their homes, work and business places with fire blankets and extinguishers to ensure the protection of lives and properties in the Territory.
Wenegieme urged FCT residents to always use the 112 emergency toll-free number in the event of an emergency.
