The former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen Abayomi Olonisakin formally handed over the leadership of Defence Headquarters to the newly appointed CDS, Maj Gen Lucky Irabor at the Defence Headquarters on Friday in Abuja.
In similar vein, the newly appointed Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo also took over the leadership of the Nigerian Navy from the former CNS, Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas, who has been in office since 2015.
Gen Olonisakin who tweeted his handing over said, “Today, I formally hand over the baton of leadership as the CDS- Armed Forces of Nigeria to Maj Gen LEO Irabor.
“I wish to sincerely appreciate the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, and Nigerians for the privilege to serve this great country. I congratulate Maj Gen Irabor and wish him a successful tenure.”
The handing over is sequel to the announcement by the presidency on Tuesday that all the service chiefs have been relieved of their duties and appointed Major General Ibrahim Attahiru as Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral A.Z Gambo as Chief of Naval Staff; and Air-Vice Marshal I.O Amao as Chief of Air Staff.
However, Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo while taking over Command as the 21st indigenous Chief of Naval Staff, was admonished by the outgone CNS, Vice Admiral Ibot Ekwe-Ibas, to secure the nation’s maritime sector and sustain the pressure on oil thieves.
Rear Admiral Gambo was born on the 22nd April, 1966 in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano state. He was enlisted into the Nigerian Navy on the 24th September, 1984 as a member of Regular Course 36, Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Kaduna.
He was subsequently commissioned as a Sub-lieutenant on the 24th September, 1988.
